Egg Freezing
“My decision to do this isn’t about my career -it’s about my lifestyle. Having this option available forces you to have conversations about what you want, even if that conversation is with yourself.” Alexa decided that freezing her eggs is more than just an investment in her future; it’s a way to give herself the freedom to create a family on her terms. Egg freezing gives Alexa and her partner of three years, the option of waiting until the time is right. Having children has always been non-negotiable to Alexa. She says freezing her eggs evens the playing field in their relationship. “I don’t know if you’re ever totally ready. I’m more open to it, but right now, he’s on the other side so we thought ‘ ‘why not take the pressure off’?” The process was quicker than she expected. Alexa met with Dr. Uzelac and had her baseline fertility tests which included both blood tests and an ultrasound to determine how many egg follicles were growing. “I came away with a peace of mind, knowing that I had more information about my fertility. I’d always suffered from inconsistent periods, and I didn’t even know if I could get pregnant. So I was armed with more information after having the first ultrasound and baseline fertility tests.
Shortly after her first appointment, she started on the 10-day course of injections. Daunting at first, Alexa says it was a fairly painless process and even her boyfriend helped her give the nightly shots. Within three weeks of her first consultation, Alexa came to Preserve for her egg retrieval. Dr. Uzelac retrieved 15 mature eggs, which will be banked, ready for Alexa to use if she finds that the normal approach to getting pregnant doesn’t work. For Alexa, freezing her eggs has been an empowering process. As someone who works in the tech industry, she’s thrilled that she’s part of a generation of women who are leveraging technology to give women more choice. “I don’t feel like I’ve done everything I need to do in my life. This gives me options.”
