As locals of Marin, we pay special attention to this event as our county has one of the highest breast cancer rates in California. At Marin Fertility Center, we have a special interest in helping women who are battling breast cancer. From a rapid response team that coordinates same day consultation and cycle management, to access to discount programs, our Fertility Preservation program is designed to ease the burden of safeguarding one’s future fertility.
Oncology treatments can significantly compromise a woman’s fertility, however, freezing eggs or embryos prior to those treatments provides hope for a future family. New developments in fertility preservation protocols make interventions safe even for women with estrogen sensitive cancers. In addition, fertility preservation treatment can begin immediately and yield the same results when compared with the more conventionsl approach of waiting for a woman’s first day of menses. For women with BRCA mutations, a recent study demonstrated that IVF did not increase the risk of developing invasive breast cancer. This is great news for women pursuing either fertility treatments or risk reducing surgery for BRCA mutations.
One of the most important aspects of breast cancer awareness is education. In support of this goal, this fall, Dr. Uzelac will be providing the medical community at Marin General Hospital a Grand Rounds lecture on Fertility Preservation for the oncology patient. We are excited about the new developments in reproductive medicine that provide more options for improved quality of life and healthier families!
